Police, protesters exchange charges of violence in Executive Yuan incident (2014/03/27)

Clashes between police and protesters at the Executive Yuan early Monday morning have led the two sides to blame each other for the confrontation. Supporters of the protesters have accused the police of using excessive force while the government has defended the police, saying it was the students who resisted police efforts to evict them from the government compound.

Students from Premier Jiang’s old department call on him to step down (2014/03/27)

Premier Jiang Yi-huah used to teach political science at National Taiwan University, but his former department has turned on him for his handling of protests against a controversial trade-in-services pact with China. Some 760 NTU political science students and graduates have signed a petition asking Jiang to step down. A protest was also held on Thursday to further vent their displeasure.

Student leader at the center of Executive Yuan siege holds outdoor lecture (2014/03/27)

Dennis Wei, a student detained but later released by police for his involvement in the siege of the Executive Yuan, gave a lecture attracting 300 students Wednesday night. The event at National Chiao Tung University was scheduled to take place indoors but had to be moved outdoors to accommodate the crowd.

Central bank governor, Perng Fai-nan, maintains interest rates, supports trade pact` (2014/03/27)

Today, Taiwan’s central bank announced it would leave interest rates unchanged at a meeting of directors and supervisors. Central bank governor, Perng Fai-nan also voiced his support for the cross-strait trade-in-services pact which he said would help Taiwan remain competitive.

Ballplayers Support FTV (2014/03/27)

Taiwanese ballplayers Chiang Chih-hsien and Lin Che-hsuan will once again start the baseball season in the US minor leagues. The two have worked hard and their morale is quite high as they continue to chase their dreams. Unfortunately, they don’t have a lot of experience in front of the camera, as you will soon see as we watch them try to film a successful take.

我國好手蔣智賢與林哲瑄,開季都是從小聯盟出發,多年來他們在美國職棒打拚,鬥志相當高昂,雖然見過很多大場面,但兩人為民視站台錄影時,全都緊張到NG。

The glimmer of hope provided by a possible meeting between President Ma Ying-jeou and the students occupying the Legislature has been dashed. The two sides had voiced support for a meeting without any preconditions, but then the students began to put forward preconditions.

Students send legislators ‘promise declarations’ in hope of ending standoff (2014/03/26)

Pan green lawmakers have proved willing to sign “promise declarations” distributed by student protesters, but KMT members have yet to oblige. The declarations include a provision that the cross-strait trade-in-services pact will not be reviewed by the Legislature until a legal framework for monitoring all agreements signed with China is in place.

Head of National Policy Agency defends violent crackdown on students to angry lawmakers (2014/03/26)

The violent expulsion of students who occupied the Executive Yuan on Sunday night raised tension in the standoff over the trade-in-services pact. Today the head of the National Police Agency defended the handling of the bloody crackdown.

Former DPP premier disputes claim of similarities to 2004 crackdown (2014/03/26)

National police chief Wang Cho-chiun compared his handling of student protesters at the Executive Yuan to a crackdown on pan blue demonstrators protesting against DPP President Chen Shui-bian in 2004. Wang’s comments were refuted by then-Premier Yu Shyi-kun, who said many of the demonstrators in 2004 were wielding weapons but the students at the Executive Yuan were unarmed.
