Northern, central Taiwan mayors given leadership roles in KMT (2014/04/30)

The KMT has named three new vice chairmen. Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin, New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu and Taichung Mayor Jason Hu will take on a greater role as the party prepares for local elections later this year and the presidential election in 2016.

Government announces first quarter GDP growth of 3.04 percent (2014/04/30)

The government’s official statistics agency announced today that first quarter GDP growth was 3.04 percent when compared with the same period last year. It is the first time since quarter one of 2013 that growth has exceeded 3 percent.

Plum rains expected to begin next week but heavier rainfall will have to wait until June (2014/04/30)

Reservoirs in central and southern regions are nearing critical levels, leaving many eagerly anticipating the arrival of plum rains. The first plum rain front is expected later this week, but forecasters warn that the strong precipitation needed to alleviate drought conditions may not arrive until June.

Switch malfunction causes serious high-speed rail delays (2014/04/29)

About 10,000 passengers were affected by the most serious of a recent spate of delays on the high-speed railway. A switch malfunction delayed traffic Tuesday morning between Taipei Main Station and Banqiao Station. More than three hours were needed to restore normal service.

High-speed railway operator expresses regret over service disruption (2014/04/29)

Following today’s service disruption, the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation held a press conference to express regret to passengers. It blamed recent delays on micro switch quality problems and said it is working with the supplier to solve the issue.

Business leaders say mothballing of nuclear plant presents challenges and opportunities (2014/04/29)

Industrial leaders expressed mixed views today over plans to mothball the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant. While many fear that higher electricity costs will drive away investors, Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou said the policy shift presents an opportunity for local businesses to find ways to save energy.
