Taiwanese pitchers get the job done in spring training (2014/03/04)
Several Taiwanese pitchers are taking part in major league spring training with hopes of making their respective teams’ opening day roster. Monday was a good day for three such hopefuls.
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Wang Wei-chung’s first challenge Monday was Chicago Cubs outfielder Aaron Cunningham. Wang struck him out – the first K for Wang in a spring training game – then did the same to the next batter, John Baker.
Over one inning Wang threw 11 pitches and retired all three batters he faced without surrendering a run. He showed excellent control with his breaking ball and his fastball peaked at 94 miles per hour. The performance was a step in the right direction for Wang’s chances of making the opening day 25-man roster.
Wang’s effort did little to help the Brewers, however, as the team only managed five hits. The Cubs showed more life at the plate on the way to a 4-2 win.
Also in action were two Taiwanese pitchers with aspirations of being closers: the Houston Astros Lo Chia-jen and the Cleveland Indians C. C. Lee. Each appeared in the ninth and helped their teams to wins.
王維中小熊
年僅21歲的台灣小將王維中，因為大聯盟規則，從菜鳥聯盟直升釀酒人隊的大聯盟春訓，今天他在熱身賽首度出場，在第六局登板後援，表現很有水準。
面對小熊打者Aaron Cunningham，王維中毫不含糊的把他K了下場，這是他在熱身賽投出的第一次三振，下一棒左打的John Baker，也面臨同樣的命運。
王維中主投一局，只用了十一球沒有失分，交出三上三下，飆出兩次三振，無論球速和變化球的控制，都十分有水準，也飆出94英里的快速球，優異的成績，為他想要擠進開季二十五人名單，踏出穩健的第一步。
不過釀酒人全場只出現五支安打，打擊發揮得並不理想，反觀小熊擊出11支安打，且掌握了滿壘局面得分，終場以四比二擊敗釀酒人。
至於都在爭取球隊終結者的太空人隊羅嘉仁與印地安人隊李振昌，今天都在第九局登板，兩人都順利完成任務，幫助球隊贏得勝利。
