Taiex drops as threat of war in Ukraine weighs heavily on investors’ minds (2014/03/04)

The threat of war in Ukraine has had a major impact on global stock markets. While many indices recovered from their Monday plunge, the Taiwan Stock Exchange slid again on Tuesday.

Investors anxiously watch the news to see how events unfold in Ukraine and on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.

The standoff between the West and Russia over the fate of Ukraine has rattled investors and hurt prices of financial and electronics stocks. Generally, the only shares that seem to be doing well are those related to military affairs.

The biggest impact on Taiwan will come from the economic sanctions the United Kingdom and United States apply to Russia. The reason for this is the long duration of such sanctions. Russia is such a large country that when its economy suffers, recovery of the global economy slows, particularly in emerging markets. This will affect stock markets.

The Taiwan Stock Exchange fell 47 points today, or more than half of a percent, to close at 8,554.
