Cherry blossoms still in bloom in Aowanda, Nantou (2014/03/07)

Cherry blossoms continue to be on view in Nantou’s Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area. Restaurants are taking advantage of the season to lure tourists with special dishes made from local ingredients.

For those who tire of the normal restaurant fare, eating establishments in Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area offer special foods only found at an elevation of 1,000 meters and above. This special fruit is available for a limited time.

This is only seasonally available from March or April to mid-June when the plant bears fruit.

When stir-fried with tomatoes and pork, the completed dish takes on a refreshing flavor.

There is also this steamed trout which uses fresh scallion and ginger plus makao and mountain pepper. It’s steamed for 12 minutes.

“Mountain pepper is not the same as mustard root, which is very bitter. This has a pungent smell.”

Because of the higher elevation, Aowanda’s Taiwan and Wusheh cherry blossoms will remain in bloom for another week or so. Tourists still have time to visit this mountain location to view cherry blossoms and endemic azaleas.
