International orchid show opens tomorrow in Tainan (2014/03/07)

One of the world’s three largest orchid shows opens in Tainan tomorrow. With tens of millions of dollars worth of orders placed each year, the Taiwan International Orchid Show is an excellent venue for development of the local agriculture industry. 

Upon walking into the show, you can see orchids hanging from the ceiling and a tunnel built of orchids. Among the guests who joined Tainan Mayor William Lai in cutting the ribbon to open the event today were Vice President Wu Den-yih and Agriculture Minister Chen Bao-ji.

In the past, our export orders were under US$60 million. But from 2008 to 2012 and 2013, we achieved US$165 million. This growth is excellent for development of the domestic agricultural industry. 

Foreign buyers use the expo to snap up orchids. Mayor Lai expressed his goals for the next decade.

Besides biotechnology, we should use orchids to develop the cultural, creative and tourism industries.

The expo will be open to the general public from Saturday to March 17. Organizers have planned 10 themed exhibitions and will put more than 2,000 varieties of orchids on display.

國際蘭花展

世界三大蘭展之一的台灣國際蘭展今天在台南後壁登場，副總統吳敦義、農委會主委陳保基和台南市長賴清德一起為開幕剪綵。陳保基表示，蘭展十年下來，創造龐大產值，光是去年外銷就有一億六千五百萬美金，賴清德也期許未來十年，蘭展要轉型，提升在地觀光和文創。

走進台灣國際蘭展會場，可看到蘭花被吊掛在天花板上，還有用蘭花打造的金黃隧道。副總統吳敦義、農委會主委陳保基今天也到場，一起和台南市長賴清德為開幕剪綵。

過去我們從外銷不到六千萬美金，到2008年到去年和前年，一億六千五百萬美金，這樣子的成長，事實上對於我們國內的農業發展來講，是一個很好的例子。

台灣國際蘭展每年吸引大批外國買家來到這裏挑花買花，為業者帶來龐大商機。接下來十年，賴清德有所期許。

就是除了生物科技這個領域之外，我們也應該藉由蘭花，來發展文化創意產業，發展生物科技產業，以及發展觀光產業。

蘭展明天起至17日開放民眾參觀，主辦單位規畫了十個主題展區，將展出超過兩千種蘭花品種。
