Defendants in army corporal abuse case given 6-8 months in prison (2014/03/07)

Thirteen defendants in the high-profile death of an army corporal last year were sentenced to between six and eight months in prison today. Family members of the victim felt the sentences were too light, and their lawyer vowed to appeal.

Eighteen soldiers faced charges in the Hung Chung-chiu case. Some were suspected of abuse that contributed to the death of the army corporal.

Taoyuan District Court found 13 of the defendants guilty, though of relatively light sentences. The stiffest sentence of eight months was given to Hung’s then-company commander, Hsu Shin-cheng. Others, including then-brigade commander Shen Wei-chih and then-sergeant-major Fan Tso-hsien received six months.

We respect the justice system, but of course we will put everything we have into appealing this result.

Family members of the victim were more emotional.

I don’t think anyone can accept what happened or this ruling. We cannot tolerate things like this continuing in the military. I believe that (Hung) Chung-chiu also would not accept this kind of ruling.

Wellington Koo, who is serving as a pro bono lawyer for the Hung family, vowed to appeal.

Previously, the group Citizen 1985 protested on behalf of Hung Chung-chiu. After the ruling was given, its members said they will consider taking to the streets again.

洪案大宣判

去年七月發生陸軍下士洪仲丘命案，將民間對軍中人權長期的不滿徹底引爆，18名被告軍士官，經過桃園地方法院開庭審理八個月後，在今天宣判，刑期最重不過八個月，結果讓洪家人痛心又憤怒，律師強調一定會上訴。

陸軍下士洪仲丘疑似在禁閉期間遭同袍虐死命案，18名軍官被起訴，今天判決出爐。

有罪的軍士官有13名，最重的是時任洪仲丘直屬連長徐信正，判處8個月有期徒刑，其餘重要相關人員包括時任旅長沈威志、時任士官長范佐憲等等，通通判刑6個月。

沈威志的律師不滿意，洪家人更是憤慨。

“我想應該沒有人可以接受，這樣的事情，這樣的判決，不是就是可以容忍，在軍中繼續發生這樣的事情，我想仲丘應該也不會認同，這樣的判決”

洪家義務律師顧立雄，強調一定會上訴。

曾經因為洪仲丘案發起遊行的公民1985聯盟則表示，不排除將再上街頭。
