Doctor suggests non-surgical methods for treating sleeping disorders (2014/03/19)

More than half of Taiwan’s population is thought to suffer from some type of sleep disorder. Doctors recommend several methods for correcting this sometimes debilitating problem, including exercising the throat with wind instruments and using a ventilation device when sleeping at night. 

This 2-meter didgeridoo is an Aboriginal Australian instrument that emits a low-frequency sound. Doctors have found that playing it teaches patients to exercise muscles in the throat and prevent tight throat or collapsed air passages. This can gradually improve sleeping disorders.

Sleep apnea treatment concentrates on the muscles inside the throat. Any instrument such as this one can train and exercise these muscles. It’s effective because we rarely use the throat muscles. 

This doctor says that common sleeping disorders including insomnia and sleep apnea can be aided by practice with wind instruments. Another option is a ventilation device.

If I don’t wear it, I don’t (get enough sleep) and have no energy. But if I wear it, I get enough sleep and am in good spirits. 

The doctor says that aside from wind instruments and ventilators, another way to correct sleeping disorders is improving the home environment.

吹奏治失眠

根據統計,國內有睡眠障礙的人口超過一半以上,醫師表示,常見的睡眠障礙,包括失眠和睡眠呼吸中止症等,而治療的方式,除了包括手術和配戴呼吸器,甚至還能透過吹奏樂器,以訓練咽喉肌肉,來達到矯正的目的。

長達二公尺的Didgeridoo,這是澳洲原住民的傳統樂器,吹奏時,會發出低頻的聲響,重點是吹奏它,能夠訓練失眠患者咽喉的緊實,醫學證實,能逐步改善睡眠呼吸機能失調的問題。

“在睡眠呼吸中止症治療裡面,咽喉部份肌肉能力是非常重要,任何樂器包括現在簡單展示,這樣的樂器,大概都可以幫助咽喉肌肉去做訓練,因為平常我們很少去用到咽喉肌肉”

醫師表示,常見的睡眠障礙包括失眠和睡眠呼吸中止症等,其中又以失眠佔最大多數,治療睡眠治療矯正的方式,除了吹奏樂器,像配帶這種呼吸器,也可以。

但醫師認為,最根本的方式,還是要修正睡眠的環境和居家的生活空間。
