Former president on hand for publishing of new electronic newspaper (2014/05/01)

Dissatisfied with the current state of media, Nobel laureate Lee Yuan-tseh and others published the first edition of the electronic newspaper “Taiwan People News” today.

To the sounds of musical saw master Lee Fang-teng, “Taiwan People News” was officially published. Present at the ceremony were former Vice President Annette Lu and former President Lee Teng-hui.

I encourage all members of “Taiwan People News” to ensure that the spirit of free press accompanies the launch of this publication.

One way the paper is raising its profile is through a special column written by director Wu Nien-jen.

Wu Nien-jen
Everyone writes too seriously, which led me to consider composing articles with greater emotion and playfulness. I think a more relaxed approach can be used to cover social problems, cultural issues and even politics.

To raise funds, over a period of a year the paper got 300 people to buy shares costing NT$100,000 each. In its initial stages, “Taiwan People News” will only be available online.

Chen Yun-shin
Chairman, ‘Taiwan People News’
If readership exceeds 1 million then I will publish a print version.

“Taiwan People News” hopes to stand out by offering stories and views that receive relatively little coverage in Taiwan’s four main newspapers.
