Separating Fact from Fiction on the Internet

Rhett Straube

The Internet is full of rumors and gossip, so much so that it's often difficult to separate fact from fiction. Furthermore, in this age of social networks, information spreads at lightning speed. This can result in false news being accepted as the truth by people around the world.

Now, computer scientists in Europe are developing a system that will reveal the truth or falsity of a claim almost immediately. To begin with, the system divides rumors into types. One type involves claims about what could happen in the near future. For example, a social media post might report that interest rates will soon rise. Another type involves topics that cause strong arguments among groups, such as Taiwan's recent trade agreement with China. This was a popular social media subject, but it was sometimes difficult to tell whether information posted about it was reliable.

People also unknowingly share inaccurate information, such as those related to health and cures for diseases. Another type of lie is spread on purpose to damage people's images. Gossip about famous actors and politicians is an example. .
