Running races used to be considered serious events requiring little more than a starting and finish line and the right clothes and shoes. Now, a new generation of running races has popped up around the world, using colors, food, and other themes to get people to run and stay fit.

Among the most popular of such events is The Color Run. Participants in this five-kilometer run get sprayed from head to toe with colored powder after each kilometer. Less a race than a celebration of healthiness and happiness, the event is untimed. In fact, many of its participants are first-time runners. Since The Color Run first began in the United States in 2012, it has held events in South America, Europe, and Asia, including Taiwan.

While The Color Run spreads happiness, fear is in the air at Run for Your Lives events. Here, racers must climb hills and cross muddy grounds and water to get to the finish line—all the while being chased by hungry zombies. After the race, runners and zombie players can relax and celebrate the day together at the postrace party.
