Hop aboard a train on the Pingxi Railway Line, and you'll agree that half the fun of traveling is getting to your destination. Completed in 1921 to transport coal, the line extends more than twelve kilometers through the Keelung River Valley between Sandiaoling and Jingtong stations. Today, it is a tourism route, giving travelers a slice of Taiwan's charming history, with beautiful views of nature along the way.

跳上平溪線的火車，你就會同意旅行的樂趣有一半是在前往目的地的路途上。一九二一年完工、用來運煤的平溪線跨越基隆河谷，從三貂嶺到菁桐車站，延伸超過十二公里。現在，它是一條觀光旅遊路線，帶給遊客一段迷人的台灣歷史，沿途還有風光明媚的自然景色。

The largest station on the line is Shifen Station, two stops from Sandiaoling. Pulling in at this station is a thrilling experience, since the train passes by stores and houses that stand just a few feet away from the tracks. Alight from the train and take a stroll through the town, whose old-time feel has made it a popular spot for filming TV ads. Be sure to sample some of Shifen's local snacks, such as the deboned chicken wings stuffed with rice.

A fifteen-minute walk from the station takes you to Shifen Waterfall. As this curtain of water rushes down, it produces a white mist that creates different colors in the sky on sunny days. You can also take a walk on Shifen's suspension bridge, which is well preserved and runs 128 meters between Shifen and Nanshan.
