Julia Gillard used to be the leader of Australia. Now she leads the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). The organization helps raise money to support education in around 70 of the world's poorest countries. One of the GPE's main efforts in these countries is to increase the number of girls in schools.
According to Gillard, many poor families face "very tough choices" when it comes to ducating their children. Many only have enough money to send one of their children to school. And the girls must often stay at home to work for their families. They never get a chance to make a better life for themselves.
But helping girls go to school is not just good for the girls themselves. Gillard believes a country can become richer, safer, and more peaceful "if girls are in school and learning."
