Laid-back yet packed with things to see and do, Melbourne is a great place to go for today's hip tourist. It's known as Australia's cultural capital since it offers all the world-class museums and leisure activities that one would expect to find in a major city. However, with charming neighborhoods, cool street art, and impressive sports venues, Melbourne also prides itself on often being rated one of the best places to live.

To get to know this city, first-time visitors should head straight for Federation Square, which is considered Melbourne's beating heart. Around this open space, there are striking buildings that host cultural performances and exhibitions all year. The geometric shapes of the buildings' glass surfaces give the area a very modern feel. While you're at Federation Square, drop by the Visitor Centre. There you can book walking tours and organize the rest of your Melbourne visit.
