The Seoul Metropolitan Government will replace 610 old subway trains with new ones by 2022 to ensure the safety of passengers and workers, the city said Wednesday.
首爾特別市政府週三表示，為確保乘客和工作人員安全，在2022年前，將把610節舊地鐵車廂汰舊換新。
The city’s plan is in response to last year’s tragic death of a temporary worker at Guui Station. The technician was hit by a train while fixing a screen door on the platform.
市府這項計畫係因應去年首爾地鐵九宜站1名臨時工喪生的悲劇。擔任技術員的死者於修月台門時，遭1輛列車撞擊。
The city government will hire security staff at stations and renovate 120 old subway stations. It will also hire more train drivers so each subway train can have at least two drivers instead of one, which was a big point of criticism by former employees and experts. The overhaul, including the train replacements, is expected to cost 7.8 trillion won.
市府將聘僱保全人員駐站，並翻新120座舊地鐵站，也將招募更多司機員，讓每輛地鐵列車能有至少兩名司機員，而非甚為前地鐵員工與專家詬病的1名。包括汰換老舊車廂在內的大檢修，預計將耗資7.8兆韓元。
Seoul’s metro is suffering from a chronic deficit, mostly due to offering free rides for the elderly. Last year, the deficit was 16 trillion won. The subway operators urged the central government to change the rules so they can charge passengers 65 and older.
首爾地鐵正為長期赤字所苦，主因在於提供年長者免費搭乘。去年，赤字達16兆韓元。地鐵營運當局呼籲中央政府修改規定，以便其向65歲及65歲以上的旅客收費。
