As a basic necessity, clothing is something we cannot do without. However, the production of certain clothes can be harmful to the environment in more ways than one. As a solution to this problem, some manufacturers are adopting eco-friendly materials taken from surprising sources.

Consider this: around half of the world's clothing is made from cotton. Yet the process required to turn cotton into clothing has a major impact on the environment, especially in the developing world. For one thing, over 20,000 liters of water might be needed to produce a single kilogram of cotton. Furthermore, the chemicals used to protect crops from insects cause pollution and health problems for workers.

For these reasons, people have been coming up with cotton alternatives. One idea is to use banana stems. Waste from this top part of the banana skin totals about one billion tons each year. However, studies show that just 37 kilograms can create one kilogram of usable fiber. Material produced from banana stems has a soft feel, making it ideal for jackets, shirts, and pants. Not only that, but its production leaves behind almost no carbon footprint at all!
