Learn about how one man came to rule the world of globes.
In 2008, London's Peter Bellerby made an unusual decision. He decided to become a globemaker. Bellerby came up with the idea while shopping for his father's 80th birthday present. He wanted to buy him a globe, but he wasn't happy with the choices that he found. They were either poorly made or expensive antiques. He thought making his own globes would be easy, but instead, it made his head spin.
First, he needed to find a good map. However, finding one without mistakes that would fit onto a round object took him months. Next, he had to have the globe designed. To get the perfect sphere, he went to a company that designs Formula One cars. What he thought would only take a few months ended up being a two-year project that cost him nearly ?200,000 to produce.
After this expensive education, he decided to set up his own studio—Bellerby & Co. His studio is one of the last in the world that makes high-quality globes. Since then, he's sold his globes to TV programs, famous celebrities, and Hollywood filmmakers. Bellerby hopes to pass down his globe-making skills to others and keep this lost art alive for the future.
