Slow Train Coming
Most travelers just want to get from point A to point B as quickly and conveniently as possible. Sometimes, however, it is nice to slow down a bit and enjoy the ride. In India, there is no better way to do so than to take a trip on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
The railway is actually a very short one, running only 78 kilometers from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling. Since its completion in 1881, the line has run from a height of 100 meters to around 2,200 meters, high up into the Himalayan Mountains. Vintage British steam locomotives take tourists to Ghum, once the highest railway station in the world. At Ghum, especially on clear days, it is possible to catch sight of the peak of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world. In order to reach such heights, trains must travel through several incredible spirals and hairpin loops.
The unique railway has inspired television producers and film directors to use it in their productions, with the most recent being Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited. Take a trip along its historic track, and chances are you will be truly inspired as well.
