Every year from November to March, the Maolin National Scenic Area is home to an amazing natural event. During this time, hundreds of thousands of purple crow butterflies fly south to the foothills of the Dawu Mountains to escape winter in the north.

每年從十一月到三月，茂林國家風景區裡都會發生一個令人驚奇的自然界盛事。在這段期間，成千上萬隻紫斑蝶會往南飛到大武山麓旁的小丘以避開北方的冬天。

The Maolin National Scenic Area, along with the well-known Monarch butterfly reserves in Mexico, is one of the world’s most famous butterfly viewing areas. This has made it a popular tourist site in Taiwan. Michelin’s Green Guide awarded it three stars and lists it as a top destination together with sites like Green Island and Taroko Gorge.

茂林國家風景區以及墨西哥著名的帝王斑蝶保護區是世上最有名的賞蝶地區。這已讓它成為臺灣的熱門觀光景點。米其林的綠色指南給了它三顆星，並將它和綠島及太魯閣等地並列為最佳旅遊目的地（編按：米其林共出版兩種指南，紅色為大家所熟知的美食指南，綠色則推薦景點與行程等）。

The best time to view the butterflies is between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. when the weather is sunny or cloudy. Purple crow butterflies are more active in warmer weather. When visiting, it is best to walk slowly and speak quietly, as loud noises tend to scare the butterflies away. It is also advised to wear proper hiking shoes, bring a light backpack, binoculars, and of course, a camera to capture the magic.

觀賞紫斑蝶的最佳時段為天氣晴朗或多雲時的早上八點到中午之間。紫斑蝶在天氣較暖時會更加活躍。參觀時，行進間最好放慢腳步並輕聲細語，因為喧鬧聲往往會嚇跑這些蝴蝶。另外也建議穿著適當的登山鞋，攜帶輕便的背包、雙筒望遠鏡，當然還有用來捕捉其魅力的相機。
