September 11, 2001, has become a very important date in world history. On that morning, 19 Islamic terrorists hijacked four passenger airplanes. They intentionally crashed two into the two tall towers of the World Trade Center, called the Twin Towers. As a result, the Twin Towers collapsed. A third airplane crashed into the Pentagon, America’s military headquarters. The fourth airplane, which had been redirected toward Washington, DC, crashed in a field in Pennsylvania when some of the passengers and flight crew fought bravely to retake control of the airplane from the terrorists.

On September 11, 2001, a total of 2,974 innocent people died in the al-Qaeda suicide attacks: 246 on the four airplanes, 2,603 in the Twin Towers and on the ground, and 125 at the Pentagon. There are 24 people listed as missing. Most of those who died were civilians, including people from over 90 different countries. These deaths include the many police officers and firefighters who entered the World Trade Center buildings to rescue people.

The terrorist attacks had a significant economic impact on the United States and world stock markets. Even today, these attacks have negative effects on the airline industry around the world.

The United States responded to the attacks by launching a war on terrorism. The United States and Britain invaded Iraq and Afghanistan to capture or kill the terrorists who were responsible for 9/11 and to try to stop it from happening again. Unfortunately, the decade of war that followed has led to the deaths of even more innocent people.
