Women who give birth after 40 are putting themselves at greater risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke later in life compared to those having children at a younger age, new research suggests.

新研究顯示，40歲之後才生小孩的女性，讓自己比較年輕生小孩者，置身於較高的心臟病發或中風風險。

The study, presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles, examined data involving more than 72,000 women, of whom 3,300 reported that they became pregnant late in life.

這份研究在洛杉磯的「美國中風協會」國際中風研討會上發表，研究檢視7萬2000多名女性，其中3300人是年紀較大才懷孕。

The researchers compared their rates of stroke, heart attack and cardiovascular death over 12 years of follow up with women who were pregnant at a younger age.

研究人員比較她們和較年輕懷孕者，在生小孩後12年間，因中風、心臟病發和心血管疾病的死亡率。

They found that 2.4 per cent of women who were pregnant at a younger age were at risk of ischemic stroke – which occurs when an artery to the brain is blocked - compared to 3.8 per cent of women who got pregnant over the age of 40.

他們發現，較年輕懷孕的女性面臨缺血性腦中風風險的比率為2.4%，也就是連到大腦的動脈阻塞，40歲後才懷孕的女性則為3.8%。
