Taiwan warns locals to avoid colored contacts in passport photos (2014/03/05)

The Bureau of Consular Affairs recommends that people not wear colored contact lenses when taking passport photos. It believes that these lenses could alter the appearance in such a way that makes travelers vulnerable to having their visas rejected.

Kaohsiung successfully harvests new variety of jujube (2014/03/05)

Many people have eaten candied jujube, but few have tried a new variety called Kaohsiung 11 “Honey” jujube. It is described as literally bursting with flavor. Farmers hope to take advantage of its rarity and taste to market it as a high-end export product.

Chen Wei-yin gets his first start of spring training as Orioles battle Yankees (2014/03/05)

Taiwan’s Chen Wei-yin started for the first time this spring as the Baltimore Orioles faced the New York Yankees in spring training. Chen pitched two innings and induced two double plays, but also gave up five hits and two runs.

Public interest group exchanges plastic tableware for ceramic tableware (2014/03/04)

Many food stalls in Taiwan continue to use plastic tableware made from melamine, which can pose a health threat if subjected to high heat. A public interest group hopes to change that by offering free ceramic tableware in exchange for the less safe plastic version.

National Chiao Tung University develops a chip to detect and control seizures (2014/03/04)

Taiwan has over 200,000 people suffering from epilepsy, about a third of which cannot be treated through medication alone. To help them and others afflicted with this dangerous condition, a research team from National Chiao Tung University has developed a chip that can be implanted in the brain to detect and suppress seizures. The chip is unique for both its success rate and its externally charged power source.

A press conference was held today by FTV to announce its latest serial costume drama. After a year of filming, FTV General Manager Chen Gang-sin hoped the drama would promote Taiwan's culture and heritage.
