Activists call for preservation of historic community threatened by urban renewal (2014/03/04)

Government plans call for the historic Taipei community of Huaguang to be torn down to make way for a glitzy commercial area modeled after Tokyo’s Roppongi district. Today a group of activists opposed to the plan gathered outside a wall that once enclosed a prison adjacent to this community. They urged the government to let the community remain so an important part of Taiwan’s history is not forgotten.

A special ceremony took place today to open the newly formed Ministry of Science and Technology. Taking over as the ministry’s first chief is Simon Chang, a former minister without portfolio.

The disturbances in Ukraine are having an impact on world markets. Commodities are up and stocks were down today, while Taiwanese businesspeople who set up factories in the Eastern European nation anxiously await new developments.

Taichung company provides snowboards to top Olympic competitors (2014/03/03)

At the Sochi Olympics, Swedish snowboarder Sven Thorgren was one of many athletes to put on a show. While Thorgren is a familiar face, few know that his snowboard was made in Taiwan. Excellent design and manufacturing have turned a company that calls this sub-tropical island home into the world’s largest original equipment manufacturer of snowboards.

Later arrival of Lunar New Year means unusual schedule for local students (2014/03/03)

In 2015, Lunar New Year’s Eve will fall on the relatively late date of Feb. 18. This has led to unusual scheduling for schools. Many students will start their new semester for one week before going on a 27-day break.

Japanese NGO cleans up Hsinchu community in response to Fukushima donations (2014/03/03)

Members of a Japanese NGO dressed in costumes today to clean a Hsinchu County street. It was their third visit to express gratitude for Taiwan’s generous donations in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima earthquake and tsunami.

Shaky 2nd Appearance
Taiwanese pitcher Yang Yao-hsun’s second spring training game didn’t go as well as his first. Appearing in relief for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Yang pitched one inning. Besides giving up a hit, he struck two batters and delivered a bases loaded walk. Despite the shaky appearance, the Pirates still beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1.

Cooler, wetter week ahead for north, northeast and east (2014/03/03)

Forecasters predict the arrival of another moisture-carrying cold weather system tomorrow. Conditions it brings will be a sign of the cooler, wetter weather to follow for northern, northeastern and eastern regions during the rest of the week.

Man cycles around Taiwan distributing free red bean soup (2014/03/02)

Tonight we have an unusual story about a young man who undertook an unusual journey. Last summer Tang Da-ke唐大可 cycled around Taiwan on an electric-powered bike freely distributing red bean soup to people in schools, nursing homes, orphanages and other places. He overcame flat tires and mechanical failures to bring people a small bowl of happiness and show them that they too can live out their dreams.
