Half a million Vibo customers lose telecom service following power outage (2014/03/26)

Customers of Vibo Telecom are upset following the company’s largest service interruption in five years. For about four hours on Wednesday, more than half a million of the telecom’s customers in northern Taiwan and Yilan were left without service.

Industry leader says trade-in-services pact needed to open Taiwan’s economy (2014/03/25)

Drowned out in the protests over the cross-strait trade-in-services pact are the voices of industry representatives, many of whom support the more open trade that the pact would bring. Among them is an industrial representative who said the benefits of an open economy outweigh the damage the pact would cause to its losers.

Court rules not enough evidence to detain alleged student ringleader (2014/03/25)

The student protester named by police as the ringleader of Sunday evening’s storming of the Executive Yuan was released early this morning. The Taipei District Court ruled there was not sufficient evidence to detain Dennis Wei for allegedly inciting the occupation of the government’s chief decision-making body.

Over NT$6 million raised to take out ads opposed to cross-strait trade-in-services pact (2014/03/25)

Front-page advertisements explaining students’ reasons for opposing the cross-strait trade-in-services pact were seen in the Apple Daily and Liberty Times today. Funding for the ads and a future one to appear in the New York Times international edition was crowdsourced a day earlier within a period of just three hours.

Families devastated after Malaysian Airlines announces everyone aboard missing aircraft is dead (2014/03/25)

Malaysian Airline officials held a press conference this afternoon announcing there were “no survivors” aboard Flight MH370. A day earlier the Malaysian prime minister said analysis of satellite data showed that the missing airliner had gone down into the Indian Ocean.

The National Palace Museum will lend two of its most popular items, a piece of jadeite resembling white cabbage and a piece of banded jasper resembling pork for exhibitions in Japan.

Council of Agriculture restricts pork sales, purchases to stabilize rising prices (2014/03/25)

The Council of Agriculture is taking several steps to cool rising pork prices. After forcing local supermarkets operated by regional farmers’ association to offer discounts on two types of pork, it is now limiting purchases by major frozen meat sellers to prevent hoarding and speculation.

Students deliver petition demanding impeachment of premier, police chief (2014/04/01)

Students are urging the government watchdog to impeach officials who ordered and led last week’s bloody crackdown on demonstrators who stormed the Executive Yuan. Chief among the officials who the students want the Control Yuan to investigate is Premier Jiang Yi-huah.

President Ma and student leaders agree in principle to talks (2014/03/25)

President Ma Ying-jeou and the students occupying the Legislature both say they are willing to meet each other without any preconditions. Such a meeting could prove to be a significant step toward ending what is already an eight-day standoff over a trade-in-services pact that Taiwan signed with China.

Riot police forcefully remove student demonstrators from the Executive Yuan (2014/03/24)

For the first time ever last night the Executive Yuan was infiltrated by demonstrators. A faction of students acting separately from those leading occupation of the Legislature decided to expand protests over the trade-in-services pact that Taiwan signed with China to the nation’s main decision-making body. After a brief occupation there, they were forcefully expelled by riot police.

Students occupying Legislature deplore use of violence by riot police (2014/03/24)

As students occupying the Legislature watched those at the Executive Yuan being beaten with police batons and doused with water, they moved to fortify their own position. They criticized the violence and called it a violation of power.

Ma administration says anti-riot measures were needed to keep government running (2014/03/24)

President Ma and Premier Jiang Yi-huah have been reluctant to expel protesters occupying the Legislature, but they showed no such qualms about removing students from the Executive Yuan. Today they defended anti-riot measures that left more than 100 people injured. They placed blame for this bloody outcome on the students and other demonstrators who they accuse of “illegally” occupying government buildings.

Protester Could Face Jail (2014/03/24)

Police arrested 61 people involved in the occupation of the Executive Yuan. Thirty-five were deemed as being caught in the act of a crime and were questioned by prosecutors. One, National Tsing Hua University graduate student Wei Yang, was named leader of the occupation.

Students occupying the Legislature voiced support today for Wei Yang and the other demonstrators who stormed the Executive Yuan. Today student leader Chen Wei-ting wondered why people like Wei are persecuted for their efforts to expose the truth.

New barricades and security staff called in to protect Executive Yuan (2014/03/24)

Security measures were beefed up around the Executive Yuan after last evening’s siege. Before the siege, only around 40 officers were guarding the offices. Commentators say blame for such oversight lies with the National Police Agency and National Security Bureau.

With student occupation of the Legislature making it all but impossible to review the trade-in-services pact at the lawmaking body, Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng gathered lawmakers at his residence today. Discussion showed that ruling and opposition parties remain far apart.

Joint statement from professors backs student-led occupation of Legislature (2014/03/24)

Among the students’ biggest supporters are the professors who teach them. A group of professors issued a joint statement today slamming the Ma Ying-jeou administration’s handling of the student occupation. They also called for a “citizen’s constitutional conference,” though Premier Jiang Yi-huah later said he was unsure of the nature of such a meeting.

Stabilization Fund Ready (2014/03/24)

Mounting protests over the cross-strait trade-in-services pact led investors to fear a steep decline for local shares. Today, the Ministry of Finance stepped forward to say it will uphold normal market function. In other words, the National Stabilization Fund is ready if it needs to intervene.
