Los Angeles Dodgers take on San Diego Padres in MLB’s opening night (2014/03/31)
Major League Baseball’s opening night pitted the Los Angeles Dodgers against the San Diego Padres. The Dodgers lead the league in payroll, but their high priced bullpen had trouble keeping the Padres at bay.
With Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw headed to the disabled list, Hyun-jin Ryu got the nod to start against the Padres. Early on he got into a jam with the bases loaded but was able to get out of the inning.
Ryu showed better command as the game went on, and from the third inning to the seventh, it was three up and three down. He had seven strike outs.
Padres starter Andrew Cashner was solid, going six innings and only giving up one run in the fifth.
In the eighth inning, Brian Wilson came on in relief for LA. On his third pitch, Seth Smith evened the score with a solo home run. Next, with men on second and third, Chris Denorfia singled home two runs.
In the end, it was the Padres over the Dodgers by a score of 3 to 1.
