Everything on Earth is either living or nonliving. A living thing is alive. A nonliving thing is not alive.

所有在地球上的事物不是「生物」就是「非生物」。生物是活生生的事物，非生物則沒有生命。

Both animals and plants are living things. Rocks, air, and water are nonliving things. There are many kinds of animals and plants. But they are similar in some ways. All of them need oxygen to survive. They also need food and water. When they eat and drink, they get nutrients. Nutrients provide energy for them. Most plants and animals need sunlight, too. Living things can also make new living things like themselves.

動物與植物兩類都屬於生物，石頭、空氣和水則是非生物。 動物與植物的種類十分多樣，但兩者在某些地方具有相似性：他們都需要氧氣以維生，同樣地，他們也需要食物與水。當他們進食與喝水時，可以從中汲取養分，而養分提供了他們能量。大部分的動植物也需要陽光，他們還可以製造出跟自己一樣的新生物。

Nonliving things are not alive. They cannot move. They cannot breathe. They cannot make new things like themselves.

非生物沒有生命，也無法移動和呼吸，他們無法製造出如同自己的新事物。
