In October 2014, 17-year-old Malala Yousafzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She was the youngest winner of this prize in history. How could this young woman have earned such a big honor?

Malala was raised in the northwest of Pakistan. Her father was an activist who spoke out against the Taliban. She followed in his footsteps by also becoming an activist. Malala began to speak out on the equal right of girls to an education.

By the time Malala was 15 years old, she was a well-known human rights activist. She appeared in a documentary and wrote a blog about her life under the Taliban army. The Taliban learned about Malala and her activities and made a death threat against her. One day on her way home from school, she was shot in the face.

Luckily she survived. Even though she was terribly hurt, Malala did not let this experience stop her. Today, she continues to speak out about women's rights and education for all. It is no wonder she was awarded this honorable prize.
