Pingtung Agriculture Biotechnology Park blends aquaculture and greenhouses (2014/03/17)

The Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park has created Taiwan’s first integrated aquaculture farm and greenhouse. It uses an ingenious process where wastewater from the aquaculture ponds can be used to raise saltwater crops.

Wang Gets Win
The Cincinnati Reds Wang Chien-ming took part in his third spring training game this year, entering as a reliever in the sixth inning. Wang pitched two innings without giving up a run. His sinker proved effective as he induced five ground outs and surrendered just one hit. Wang also benefitted from run support, giving him the win as the Reds beat the Oakland Athletics by a final score of 7 to 6.

Taiwan Railways employees find personal ways of recording history (2014/03/16)

Taiwan Railway employees are playing an important role in preserving local railway culture. One ticket taker at Taichung’s Shalu Station has published a book and is making a documentary to record her experiences working for the railway. And a conductor has a collection of train tickets that now totals more than 100,000. Their love of the railroad means that Taiwan Railways history can be shared with future generations.

National Holidays
Premier Jiang Yi-huah is considering increasing the number of holidays next year. After a discussion with the Ministry of the Interior, three different proposals have been put forward, including scheduling the Lunar New Year holiday to run for 9 days, or adding days off if a holidays occurs on weekend, or designating Lantern Festival or Christmas as national holidays. A final decision could be achieved by Monday at the earliest. 

Ko Responds To Critics (2014/03/16)

Ko Wen-je, a surgeon at National Taiwan University Hospital, and an independent candidate in the Taipei mayoral election was absent for today’s televised debate. He was attending another function in Yilan today, though this did not prevent former vice-president Annette Lu from labeling him a runaway doctor and potentially a runaway mayor.

Opposition candidates seeking the DPP’s bid to run for Taipei mayor were given the opportunity to cross examine each other today in the second televised debate. The result was some heated debate ranging from professional qualifications to some candidates who prepared special visual aids.

A second televised debate for candidates seeking to gain the DPP’s nomination to run for Taipei mayor. Five candidates took part in the event, including author and independent candidate, Neil Peng. Candidates took aim at one another, as well as one independent candidate, Ko Wen-je, who was absent from the debate, though has been wildly trumpeted as a candidate for integration into the party.

Member of family opposed to urban renewal project gives in to developer’s demands (2014/03/14)

A surprise turn of events has occurred in one of Taiwan’s highest-profile urban renewal disputes. A member of the Wang family that is opposed to the Wenlin Yuan Urban renewal project has torn down a temporary structure the family built on the worksite. The move signals a rift in the Wang family. 

Family of passenger on Malaysian Air jet holds on to hope (2014/03/14)

Taiwanese Coast Guard and Navy ships as well as a transport plane continue to assist in the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines jet. The family of a Taiwanese woman and her Malaysian husband who were on the flight are holding out hope the aircraft and passengers who were on it will still be found. 

Hong Kong Film Event (2014/03/14)

The 18th Hong Kong International Film and TV Market takes place from March 24 to 27. Nearly 130 works along with 60 television and film companies will be featured.
