Australia is usually in the news for its droughts, not its floods. This year is different, though, and heavy rains have caused biblical flooding. Thousands of people have lost their homes, and life across the country isin chaos.

President Ma visits Port of Taipei to inspect free economic demonstration zone (2014/02/16)

Today, President Ma Ying-jeou made a public visit the Port of Taipei. He appeared with New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu, ahead of a 4-day seminar about regional trade which begins on Monday.

Hong Kong universities offer scholarship opportunities to top local students (2014/02/16)

Scores for the Joint College Entrance Exam have recently been released to local students who are now beginning to apply to colleges. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is also actively recruiting local students, offering those with top scores a full 4-year scholarship worth an estimated NT$2.5 million.

Hopes of Ma-Xi meeting apparently dashed (2014/02/14)

When Taiwan sent its top cross-strait policy planner to meet his counterpart in China, there was hope for a meeting between the two sides’ presidents later this year. On Friday evening, when Mainland Affairs Council Minister Wang Yu-chi returned to Taiwan, he put that idea to rest. Wang said Beijing believes APEC is an inappropriate setting, and it didn’t name a location that it would accept.

Hon Hai plans to hire 15,000 in Taiwan this year (2014/02/14)

Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou made an impressive pledge today – to hire 15,000 workers in Taiwan. Taiwan stands to benefit from Hon Hai’s moves to increase manufacturing outside of China. Hon Hai is also looking to move its manufacturing bases closer to its markets, which will benefit countries with large populations and economic advantages, such as Indonesia and the United States.
