Activists call for preservation of historic community threatened by urban renewal (2014/03/04)

Government plans call for the historic Taipei community of Huaguang to be torn down to make way for a glitzy commercial area modeled after Tokyo’s Roppongi district. Today a group of activists opposed to the plan gathered outside a wall that once enclosed a prison adjacent to this community. They urged the government to let the community remain so an important part of Taiwan’s history is not forgotten.

These demonstrators are gathered around an ancient wall that once enclosed the Taipei Prison Settlement. They are there to remember their ancestors who served as the first generation of democracy activists in Taiwan.

Prisoners who stayed here included the early Japanese resistance fighter Lo Fu-hsing and the 1920s social activist Chiang Wei-shui. The wall is the only artifact left that preserves their memory. Beside it is Huaguang Community, which soon could be torn down.

You can say that this place served as a witness to Taiwan’s entire history of resistance against oppression. If its culture and history are torn out for the sake of beautification, it will be left without any meat or blood. What use is that?

These ancestors also mentioned another reason to preserve Huaguang Community: the rocks underneath many of its buildings that once were part of the city’s walls.
