Veteran protest organizer offers strategic advice to students (2014/03/31)

It is still unclear how the impasse between the students opposed to the cross-strait trade-in-services pact and the Ma Ying-jeou administration will be resolved. A former protest leader urged demonstrators to force dialogue with Ma or risk losing support over time.

After the peaceful conclusion of yesterday’s Sunflower Movement rally, student leaders returned to the Legislative Yuan and reiterated their demands. Questions have emerged over what the next step will be for these students and whether they are truly prepared for a long ordeal.

We are exploring the possibility of a wide range of dialogues. We have opened many communication channels and are still hoping for a well-intentioned response. We believe our bargaining power increases every day we continue to occupy the Legislative Yuan. 
A prolonged battle doesn’t come without costs, as a number of pending bills will be delayed. A deputy director of the red-shirt protesters who took on then-President Chen Shui-bian in 2006 had some advice.

Social movements that drag on too long, especially large-scale mobilizations, are difficult to continue for a long time. The red-shirt movement may be a bad example, because Mr. Shih did not insist on (a time frame). This dragged out the movement until nobody would support it. We went from thousands of people down to a few dozen.

This veteran organizer believes the students’ next step should be a peaceful resolution that forces President Ma Ying-jeou to respond to their demands.

五十萬黑衫軍上凱道發出怒吼，雖然以理性平和落幕又回到立法院持續堅守，然而，面對馬政府始終不提出具體承諾，這場政治僵局該如何解套？本台日前專訪學運總指揮林飛帆，他就坦然表示，學生內部早已開始思考這場學運的下一步該怎麼走，並再度呼籲馬總統回應民意。

在平和中落幕的330反服貿遊行後，群眾再度回到立法院，堅守表達訴求。但學運下一步該怎麼走？讓學生領袖陷入長考。

“我們也在尋求各式各樣對話的可能性，我們也把很多溝通的管道，都釋放出去 目前為止，我們還在等，就是希望能夠得到一些善意的回應，我們的判斷是，只要我們能在國會多待一天，我們談判的籌碼其實是越來越大”

但持續抗爭，可能會帶來更多的社會成本、立法院裡許多待審的法案，也都會因為國會運作而延宕。在2006年曾擔任紅衫軍副總指揮的台灣促進和平基金會執行長，提出建議。

“社會運動拖太長，尤其是大規模動員的，不可能拖很長時間，紅衫軍是不好的例子，因為施先生他沒有堅持，他把運動時間拖得很長，動員不起來了嘛，從幾千人消退到剩下幾十人”

過來人建議，下一步就是要以和平非暴力，但卻是更積極的手段，讓馬總統不得不具體回應學生訴求。
