Former gang leader and pro-China activist confronts student protestors (2014/04/01)

Tension was high today at the Legislative Yuan when a former leader of the Bamboo Union gang and pro-China activist confronted student protesters. Chang An-lo compared the students to kidnappers and demanded that they leave the lawmaking body.

Student leaders have generally tried to keep occupation of the Legislative Yuan peaceful. They were pleased when former gang leader Chang An-lo left the Legislative Yuan today without major incident.

Alleged links between former gang leader and Ma Ying-jeou (2014/04/01)

For years President Ma Ying-jeou has been dogged by rumors that he and former gang leader Chang An-lo are close associates. Some of the most damaging allegations came just before Ma’s first election as president, in which he admitted that his sister had met Chang in China while Chang was a fugitive of the law.

Committee co-convener, caucus whip apologize for ramming trade pact through committee (2014/04/01)

The spark that led students to occupy the Legislative Yuan was when a KMT legislator rammed the trade-in-services pact through committee in just 30 seconds. Students decried the ruling party over what they perceived to be a failure to follow democratic procedures. Since then, the responsible legislator and caucus whip have apologized and agreed to send the pact back to committee for review.

Lin Fei-fan says occupation of Legislative Yuan justified in face of illegal acts by government (2014/04/01)

In an interview with Al Jazeera, a leader of the student occupation of the Legislative Yuan argued that civil disobedience is justified because the government broke the law. Lin Fei-fan said that the students plan to continue their protest until a “proper response” from the Ma Ying-jeou administration is received.

President, business leaders search for ways to end standoff over trade-in-services pact (2014/03/31)

President Ma Ying-jeou says the Cabinet will announce plans for a civic constitutional meeting as early as Thursday. It is one of several olive branches Ma has offered to students protesting against the cross-strait trade-in-services pact. But Ma has not managed to build a platform for dialogue with the students, which has led some anxious business leaders to propose meeting with the students themselves.

Vice economics minister explains trade-in-services pact to students (2014/03/31)

With President Ma Ying-jeou unable to make substantial progress with the students occupying the Legislature, the government has begun to take its argument to university campuses. On that front, Vice Economics Minister Woody Duh visited National Chengchi University today to explain the cross-strait trade-in-services pact to students.

Organizers and police vary wildly in estimating rally attendance figures (2014/03/31)

Organizers of yesterday’s Sunflower Movement mass rally estimated that crowds reached half a million people. That was more than four times the number put forward by police, making it difficult to know whom to trust.
