Council of Agriculture restricts pork sales, purchases to stabilize rising prices (2014/03/25)

The Council of Agriculture is taking several steps to cool rising pork prices. After forcing local supermarkets operated by regional farmers’ association to offer discounts on two types of pork, it is now limiting purchases by major frozen meat sellers to prevent hoarding and speculation.

Students deliver petition demanding impeachment of premier, police chief (2014/04/01)

Students are urging the government watchdog to impeach officials who ordered and led last week’s bloody crackdown on demonstrators who stormed the Executive Yuan. Chief among the officials who the students want the Control Yuan to investigate is Premier Jiang Yi-huah.

President Ma and student leaders agree in principle to talks (2014/03/25)

President Ma Ying-jeou and the students occupying the Legislature both say they are willing to meet each other without any preconditions. Such a meeting could prove to be a significant step toward ending what is already an eight-day standoff over a trade-in-services pact that Taiwan signed with China.

Riot police forcefully remove student demonstrators from the Executive Yuan (2014/03/24)

For the first time ever last night the Executive Yuan was infiltrated by demonstrators. A faction of students acting separately from those leading occupation of the Legislature decided to expand protests over the trade-in-services pact that Taiwan signed with China to the nation’s main decision-making body. After a brief occupation there, they were forcefully expelled by riot police.

Students occupying Legislature deplore use of violence by riot police (2014/03/24)

As students occupying the Legislature watched those at the Executive Yuan being beaten with police batons and doused with water, they moved to fortify their own position. They criticized the violence and called it a violation of power.

Ma administration says anti-riot measures were needed to keep government running (2014/03/24)

President Ma and Premier Jiang Yi-huah have been reluctant to expel protesters occupying the Legislature, but they showed no such qualms about removing students from the Executive Yuan. Today they defended anti-riot measures that left more than 100 people injured. They placed blame for this bloody outcome on the students and other demonstrators who they accuse of “illegally” occupying government buildings.

Protester Could Face Jail (2014/03/24)

Police arrested 61 people involved in the occupation of the Executive Yuan. Thirty-five were deemed as being caught in the act of a crime and were questioned by prosecutors. One, National Tsing Hua University graduate student Wei Yang, was named leader of the occupation.

Students occupying Legislature express support for students who stormed Executive Yuan (2014/03/24)

Students occupying the Legislature voiced support today for Wei Yang and the other demonstrators who stormed the Executive Yuan. Today student leader Chen Wei-ting wondered why people like Wei are persecuted for their efforts to expose the truth.

New barricades and security staff called in to protect Executive Yuan (2014/03/24)

Security measures were beefed up around the Executive Yuan after last evening’s siege. Before the siege, only around 40 officers were guarding the offices. Commentators say blame for such oversight lies with the National Police Agency and National Security Bureau.

Meeting at legislative speaker’s residence fails to yield consensus on trade-in-services pact) (2014/03/24)

With student occupation of the Legislature making it all but impossible to review the trade-in-services pact at the lawmaking body, Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng gathered lawmakers at his residence today. Discussion showed that ruling and opposition parties remain far apart.
