Taiwanese Tandem
The Baltimore Orioles 21-year-old pitcher Lin Yi-hsiang has been in Florida spring training with fellow countryman Chen Wei-yin. Both are lefties, and Lin says he has learned a lot under the guidance of Chen. Lin’s goals this year are to make it out of Class A Short Season and play for Taiwan at the Asian Games.

Protesting students await responses to trade pact demands (2014/03/20)

As students continue to occupy the Legislature over the trade-in-services pact Taiwan signed with China, they are waiting for the president and legislative speaker to respond to demands. These include a line-by-line review of the pact, which the ruling KMT had promised then reneged on, and direct dialogue with President Ma Ying-jeou.

Professors are among the biggest supporters of the occupying students. Around two dozen have begun holding outdoor classes on the Legislature’s grounds to give students lessons in democracy.

Bamboo handicraft maker weaves QR codes (2014/03/20)

One of the functions of smart phones is reading optical labels commonly known as QR codes. To expand its product line, a bamboo handicraft maker in Nantou began creating QR code from thin bamboo strips. The products are eye-catching and perfectly readable for smart phones.

Opposition lawmakers, entertainers support students who stormed Legislature (2014/03/19)

Opposition lawmakers and entertainers are expressing support for students who climbed barriers and broke through police lines to storm the Legislature last night. The students occupied the speaker’s podium in order to prevent passage of a trade-in-services pact Taiwan signed last year with China. Fearful that the agreement could pave the way for Chinese businesses to take jobs away from Taiwan, the students are demanding greater transparency and a line-by-line review of the pact.

Court ruling lets Wang Jin-pyng keep KMT membership (2014/03/19)

Last fall Taiwan’s ruling KMT was rocked by a political dispute that led to the expulsion one of its highest-ranking members, Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng. Wang ended up keeping his party membership through an injunction, and today Taipei District Court ruled that the KMT violated the Civil Associations Act when it stripped Wang of his membership.
