21-year-old pitcher Wang Wei-chung got a surprise shot at the major leagues when the Milwaukee Brewers selected him in last year’s Rule 5 Draft. This spring training, he’s doing his best to stick. In his second relief appearance, Wang pitched two innings against the Colorado Rockies and recorded two strikeouts. It was an improvement on his first appearance, and Wang kept his ERA at zero. The Brewers won 5-3.

Cherry blossoms continue to be on view in Nantou’s Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area. Restaurants are taking advantage of the season to lure tourists with special dishes made from local ingredients.

Chairman of high-speed rail company resigns suddenly, drawing ire of lawmakers (2014/03/06)

Ou Chin-der (歐晉德) resigned as chairman of Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation without warning Wednesday night, apparently to take responsibility for the high-speed rail line’s recent problems. Lawmakers were stunned by the decision and angered by its timing, coming as it did just a day before he was to testify at a legislative hearing.

In four years running Taiwan’s high-speed line, Ou helped reverse company’s losses (2014/03/06)

Ou’s resignation ends a four-and-a-half year stint as head of the high-speed rail company. He is best known for leading the company out of a financial crisis after he took over in 2009 and making it profitable in 2011. But his reputation has been hurt more recently, at least with the public, by fare hikes and a series of train delays.

Taiwan’s statistics bureau had some bad news for consumers Wednesday. The price of a basket of 17 daily commodities rose in February at the fastest pace in 25 months. But salaried workers are fighting the inflation trend by engaging in group buying online.
