Chairman of high-speed rail company resigns suddenly, drawing ire of lawmakers (2014/03/06)

Ou Chin-der (歐晉德) resigned as chairman of Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation without warning Wednesday night, apparently to take responsibility for the high-speed rail line’s recent problems. Lawmakers were stunned by the decision and angered by its timing, coming as it did just a day before he was to testify at a legislative hearing.

The rail company’s spokesman Ted Chia confirmed Ou’s resignation as chairman, though Ou will stay on as CEO until the board chooses a new leader. Chia said Ou quit because of the trouble caused to society by recent fare hikes and service disruptions.

Local media speculated that Transportation Minister Yeh Kuang-shih forced Ou to step down, speculation that Yeh denied when asked about it Thursday.

Ou’s resignation angered even KMT lawmakers, who accused Ou of having little respect for officials in charge of supervising the rail line. One told Yeh during the hearing to let Ou leave.

The Transportation Committee eventually passed a resolution condemning Ou. It demanded that he not be retained as chairman and that he be relieved of his position as CEO.

歐晉德請辭

高鐵董事長歐晉德昨天晚間閃電請辭，震驚台北政壇，立法院交通委員會的朝野立委，不滿歐晉德原本應該在今天要到立法院報告高鐵業務，卻突然請辭，還要求交通部不得慰留。

歐晉德昨晚請辭高鐵董事長，但續任執行長，直到董事會決定新的人選，高鐵發言人賈先德證實這項消息，說是因為高鐵最近運轉安全調度及票價調漲對社會造成紛擾。

交通部長葉匡時被媒體問及逼退歐晉德的傳言，鄭重否認。

歐晉德的閃辭，連國民黨自家立委都火大，直言歐晉德沒把高層放在眼裡，要葉匡時別再慰留。

交通委員會朝野立委最後通過譴責歐進德一案，要求交通部不得慰留，並免除歐晉德執行長的職務。
