As food costs rise, salaried workers turn to group buying to save money (2014/03/06)

Taiwan’s statistics bureau had some bad news for consumers Wednesday. The price of a basket of 17 daily commodities rose in February at the fastest pace in 25 months. But salaried workers are fighting the inflation trend by engaging in group buying online.

This meal of chicken leg nuggets, flaky onion pancakes, turnip cakes, kimchi and dumplings were purchased in a group deal by four salaried workers. The meal cost them NT$200, or only NT$50 a person.

Here’s how they saved. The order of two dumplings that normally costs NT$50 set them back only NT$28, about a 40 percent discount. They saved about 7 percent on the 13-centimeter long chicken leg nugget and with a drink added, the savings on the three items together was about 30 percent.

“In one month my small family saves about NT$600 to NT$700.”

Vendors who sell through group buying sites see it as a way to sustain revenue growth at a time when the general cost of living is on the rise.

A lot of women and moms are buying daily commodities such as pork chops or chicken cutlets or eggs in groups. Over the last month or two, our sales have risen 15-20 percent.

Seizing on consumers’ desire to save money, group buying sites now offer everything consumers might want, from food and drink to leisure and entertainment. And as they do so, they are generating growth for themselves.
