Lin Fei-fan says occupation of Legislative Yuan justified in face of illegal acts by government (2014/04/01)

In an interview with Al Jazeera, a leader of the student occupation of the Legislative Yuan argued that civil disobedience is justified because the government broke the law. Lin Fei-fan said that the students plan to continue their protest until a “proper response” from the Ma Ying-jeou administration is received.

President, business leaders search for ways to end standoff over trade-in-services pact (2014/03/31)

President Ma Ying-jeou says the Cabinet will announce plans for a civic constitutional meeting as early as Thursday. It is one of several olive branches Ma has offered to students protesting against the cross-strait trade-in-services pact. But Ma has not managed to build a platform for dialogue with the students, which has led some anxious business leaders to propose meeting with the students themselves.

On that front, Vice Economics Minister Woody Duh visited National Chengchi University today to explain the cross-strait trade-in-services pact to students.

Organizers and police vary wildly in estimating rally attendance figures (2014/03/31)

Organizers of yesterday’s Sunflower Movement mass rally estimated that crowds reached half a million people. That was more than four times the number put forward by police, making it difficult to know whom to trust.

Praise has been widespread for the peaceful nature of Sunday’s rally. In part this was due to student crews who ended the rally in the early evening and helped keep the day’s proceedings under control.

Demonstrations in 49 cities show solidarity with students occupying Legislature (2014/03/31)

Besides those demonstrating in Taiwan yesterday, the Sunflower Movement drew support of Taiwanese studying overseas. Activities took place in nearly 50 cities worldwide as students sought to let people know what is happening in their home country.

For nearly two decades property rights have stalled progress in the “justice building” urban renewal project in Taipei. Dismantling of old structures on this prime piece of real estate near Zhongxiao Fuxing Station finally began today.

Major League Baseball’s opening night pitted the Los Angeles Dodgers against the San Diego Padres. The Dodgers lead the league in payroll, but their high priced bullpen had trouble keeping the Padres at bay.

Student leaders thank crowds who gathered to protest cross-strait trade-in-services pact (2014/03/30)

From midday today a mass of black-shirted protesters assembled on Ketagalan Boulevard and surrounding streets. Organizers estimate that hundreds of thousands of people joined together in protest against the cross-strait trade-in-services pact. Student leaders thanked those who came out to support what they are calling an historical event.

Professors turn out for Sunday’s protest on Ketagalan Boulevard (2014/03/30)

Today’s protest attracted professors standing in solidarity with students opposing the cross-strait trade-in-services pact. As some led a sit-in outside the Legislative Yuan to protect the students inside, others joined those demonstrating on Ketagalan Boulevard.

Past democracy activists turn out to support student demonstrators (2014/03/30)

Twenty-four years ago student activists gathered in Taipei to seek direct elections. Today leaders of the demonstration, known as the Wild Lily Student Movement, returned to Memorial Square, now called Liberty Square. They marched with students protesting against the cross-strait trade-in-services pact.

As students seek to expand protest, New Taipei mayor suggests they find a way to end occupation (2014/03/28)

The students hope the Sunday protest will raise the stakes of their movement and bring President Ma Ying-jeou’s government to its knees. A municipal leader in Ma’s KMT party, New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu, urged the students to instead take a step back and allow normal democratic mechanisms to resume.

Premier bends a little to student demands, but two sides remain far apart (2014/03/28)

After showing virtually no willingness to compromise, the ruling KMT has become more accepting of some of the student demands. Today Premier Jiang Yi-huah said the government is open to drafting a screening mechanism for future cross-strait agreements. But he is unwilling for review of the cross-strait trade-in-services pact to be postponed until this screening mechanism is in place. ##

Opposition releases poll showing support for trade pact to be renegotiated (2014/03/28)

The student occupation of the Legislature has drawn more attention to the trade-in-services pact Taiwan signed with China. That has helped many people better understand the agreement, and over 70 percent of respondents feel it should be renegotiated, according to a poll conducted by the opposition DPP.

Chen Prepares for Season Start
Taiwan’s Chen Wei-yin is preparing for his first start of the season for the Baltimore Orioles. The outing will likely be Friday, April 4 against the defending MLB champs, the Boston Red Sox. Today in Chen’s bullpen session, the Orioles deliberately reduced his number of pitches to prepare him for next week’s start. The Orioles also recently departed their Florida spring training base and returned to Baltimore to prepare for the start of the season.
