Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin announced today that the Songshan MRT line will open by the end of the year. A big change is that passengers coming from the Xindian area will no longer have direct access to Taipei Main Station and the Tamsui line.

Students announce they will end occupation of Legislature (2014/04/07)

The curtain will soon come down on a three-week occupation of Taiwan's legislature by students protesting a controversial trade pact with China. The students say they will leave by 6 pm Thursday, but stressed the occupation has been a victory for Taiwan’s democracy.

The fallout from Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng’s decision to prioritize a cross-strait monitoring mechanism over the trade-in-services pact is widespread. While it has opened a path to ending the student occupation it has also sparked internal strife within the KMT.

KMT legislator suspects that Wang and students had secret agreement (2014/04/07)

Speaker Wang Jin-pyng’s surprise announcement infuriated some members of the KMT caucus who accuse him of selling out the party. Speculation followed, with KMT Legislator Alex Fai saying it seems like Wang made an agreement with student protesters prior to his visit yesterday.

During the nearly three-week student occupation of the Legislature, onlookers have waited for Speaker Wang Jin-pyng to take control of the government body he oversees. Today Wang emerged from his relative silence to announce he will not let review of the trade-in-services pact Taiwan signed with China proceed until a monitoring mechanism for handling such pacts is in place.

Presidential Office and Cabinet respond to Wang’s surprising promise (2014/04/06)

Wang’s pledge to legislate a cross-strait agreement monitoring mechanism before reviewing the trade-in-services pact makes it unlikely that President Ma Ying-jeou will get his wish for fast passage of the pact. Today the Presidential Office expressed support for the KMT caucus, rather than Wang, while the Cabinet said it respects the speaker’s authority.

Ruling party reacts to ‘surprise’ concession made by legislative speaker (2014/04/06)

Speaker Wang Jin-pyng’s pledge to legislate a monitoring mechanism before reviewing the trade pact has brought to light stark friction within the ruling party. Several lawmakers who were present for Wang’s statement criticized the speaker by saying they felt Wang betrayed them and sold out the KMT. But others, such as KMT Legislator Lo Shu-lei, spoke out in Wang’s defense.

Police, counter-protesters greet student protesting against New Taipei City lawmakers (2014/04/06)

Demonstrations against specific lawmakers who support the trade-in-services pact continued today. About 1,500 people gathered for a march in New Taipei City where they were greeted by not only counter-protesters but also police who warned them that they were protesting without a permit.

White Shirt Counter-protest (2014/04/06)

In an effort to end student occupation of the Legislature, the Civil Justice Alliance mobilized nearly 100 supporters in white shirts at Taipei Main Station. They planned to march to the Legislature to start a dialogue with students inside the legislative assembly.

Labor Day anti-trade pact rally to pit worker against worker (2014/04/06)

Laborers are at odds over an anti-services trade pact rally. A group of labor representatives announced the rally to take place on May 1 in response to student-led demonstrations against the pact. But other labor representatives voiced concern by telling workers to stay away from a movement that has already grown political.

Students occupying the Legislature over the trade-in-services pact that Taiwan signed with China hope that their movement can have a lasting impact. A new tactic they used today is street demonstrations against specific lawmakers whom they hold responsible for non-transparent governance.

With normal operations at the Legislature on hiatus, student demonstrators plan to hold their own people’s assemblies. Through deliberations they will review proposed monitoring mechanisms to be used for all agreements signed with China.

Students, government at odds over citizens’ constitutional conference (2014/04/04)

Another area of dispute between the government and the students is whether to hold a national affairs conference on trade and economics or a citizens’ constitutional conference. The government has agreed to the former, which would concentrate on the trade-in-services pact and other economic issues. The students want the latter, which would be wide-ranging and even address government structural reform.

Government submits bill to oversee pacts with China; students reject it (2014/04/03)

The student protest over the trade-in-services pact Taiwan signed with China is now in its 17th day. One of the demands of the students occupying the Legislative Yuan is that an oversight mechanism for pacts with China be created. The government submitted a proposed mechanism Thursday that it says would increase transparency in the process and get more people involved. But the students rejected it out of hand.

DPP lawmakers again block review of trade-in-services pact with China (2014/04/03)

The DPP blocked a review of a trade-in-services pact with China for the second day in a row. DPP lawmakers locked the door of the room in which the joint committee session was to be held, keeping out their KMT colleagues and preventing the meeting from taking place. Committee convener Chang Ching-chung said the review would have to be rescheduled.
