Students will rely on promise from legislative speaker (2014/04/08)

Students are withdrawing from the Legislature following a pledge from Speaker Wang Jin-pyng to legislate a cross-Taiwan Strait monitoring mechanism ahead of the services trade pact. President Ma Ying-jeou promises to push for simultaneous review, but it is Wang who controls the legislative docket.

After Wang Jin-pyng pledged to institutionalize a monitoring mechanism for cross-strait agreements before convening review of the services trade pact, this was the response from President Ma:

Speaker Wang’s statement was not in opposition to line-by-line review of the services trade pact. A majority of citizens support completing legislation for the cross-strait agreement monitoring mechanism as soon as possible, and simultaneous, line-by-line review of the services trade pact.

Student protest leaders say protests will be renewed if Wang’s pledge isn’t fulfilled.

The DPP vows to boycott any review of the services trade pact scheduled by the KMT.

The pledge Speaker Wang made to the students was to legislative first then review the pact. It was clear. If the KMT still seeks to defy this pledge, there is no way that we would agree.

Through their March 30 rally and other demonstrations, the students behind the Sunflower Movement have put pressure on the government. They are ready to leave the Legislature but promise to renew protests if the Ma administration does not fulfill their requests.

太陽花學運決定退場，馬總統昨天在黨團大會除了表達肯定，也再次說明服貿協議的審查和"兩岸監督條例"立法可以並行，學運總指揮林飛帆強調，只要任何一個政治人物不守承諾，將再度號召上街頭，民進黨也堅持挺學生的立場

對於立法院長王金平拋出，兩岸協議監督條例沒通過立法前，就不召集服貿協議的朝野協商，總統馬英九這樣回應。

此話一出，學運總指揮強調立法前不得審服貿，如果有變數，不排除再一次上街頭。

民進黨也揚言，如果國民黨敢再排服貿的案子，一定杯葛到底。
