Cheesecake is a favorite food of people all around the world, but where did this popular dish come from? Believe it or not, different kinds of cheesecake have been eaten for thousands of years.

起司蛋糕是一種世界各地人們最喜愛的食物,但這個受歡迎的食物是從哪裡來的呢?信不信由你,人們食用不同種類的起司蛋糕已有數千年之久了。

 

The first people to develop cheesecake were the ancient Greeks. They started making it around four thousand years ago. Their cheesecake wasn't made like modern ones; it was much simpler. To make their cheesecake, the Greeks mixed together flour, honey, and cheese. They thought that their cheesecake would provide lots of energy, and historians believe that Greek athletes ate it before they competed in the ancient Olympics.

最早發展出起司蛋糕的人是古希臘人。他們在大約四千年前開始做起司蛋糕。他們的起司蛋糕作法跟現代的起司蛋糕不同,簡單多了。希臘人把麵粉、蜂蜜和起司混合在一起來製作起司蛋糕。他們認為他們的起司蛋糕能提供許多能量,而歷史學家相信希臘運動員在古奧運競賽前會吃這種蛋糕。

 

After the Romans conquered Greece, they made their own version of cheesecake. Unlike the Greeks, the Romans used eggs in their cheesecake recipe. The Romans went on to take over many other parts of Europe. Everywhere they went, a new version of cheesecake was developed. Each type used local ingredients as well as different kinds of cheeses. Today, we are lucky to have so many styles of cheesecake to enjoy.

羅馬人征服希臘之後,他們製作了自己版本的起司蛋糕。跟希臘人不同的是,羅馬人在他們的起司蛋糕食譜中使用了蛋。羅馬人陸續占領歐洲許多其他地區。他們每到一個地方就會發展出一種新的起司蛋糕。每一種都用了當地的原料以及不同種類的起司。如今,我們很幸運能有這麼多種的起司蛋糕可以享用。
