His buildings can be seen in cities around the world—from Taichung, Taiwan, to Washington DC in the United States. His iconic designs include the great glass pyramid outside the Louvre Museum in Paris, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, and The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. Ieoh Ming Pei (I. M. Pei), who died in 2019 aged 102, is well deserving of the title "The Master of Modern Architecture."
Born in 1917 in China, Pei moved to the United States to study when he was just 17 years old. In 1946, he achieved a master's degree in architecture from Harvard University, and in 1948, he accepted a top position at Webb & Knapp, a property development company. There, he produced his first successful project—an office building for Gulf Oil in Atlanta, Georgia. After several successful years at the company, however, Pei wanted more creative freedom. So in 1955, he set out on his own and established his own company, I. M. Pei & Associates.
Over the next several decades, using a combination of simple shapes and materials such as glass, concrete, and steel, Pei designed some of the world's most unique buildings. His amazing work won him award after award. And although he officially retired in 1990, Pei, ever dedicated to his work, continued to design until his last days.
