One fear associated with the cross-strait trade-in-services pact is that it sends Taiwan further down the path toward unification with China. Critics compare the pact, and the Economic Cooperation Free Trade Agreement the Ma Ying-jeou administration previously signed, with treaties between Hong Kong and the mainland. They believe that the problems Hong Kong has faced during its integration with the PRC could likewise be felt in Taiwan. ##

Huang Shyh-ming resigns after being found guilty of leaking investigation info (2014/03/21)

When Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng skipped the meeting on the student occupation with President Ma Ying-jeou on Friday, it brought back memories of a major political dispute between the two last year. Today the person who started that dispute by telling Ma about alleged influence peddling by Wang was found guilty of leaking information related to an ongoing investigation. After being convicted, State Prosecutor-General Huang Shyh-ming resigned.

The Baltimore Orioles 21-year-old pitcher Lin Yi-hsiang has been in Florida spring training with fellow countryman Chen Wei-yin. Both are lefties, and Lin says he has learned a lot under the guidance of Chen. Lin’s goals this year are to make it out of Class A Short Season and play for Taiwan at the Asian Games.

Protesting students await responses to trade pact demands (2014/03/20)

As students continue to occupy the Legislature over the trade-in-services pact Taiwan signed with China, they are waiting for the president and legislative speaker to respond to demands. These include a line-by-line review of the pact, which the ruling KMT had promised then reneged on, and direct dialogue with President Ma Ying-jeou.

Opposition lawmakers, entertainers support students who stormed Legislature (2014/03/19)

Opposition lawmakers and entertainers are expressing support for students who climbed barriers and broke through police lines to storm the Legislature last night. The students occupied the speaker’s podium in order to prevent passage of a trade-in-services pact Taiwan signed last year with China. Fearful that the agreement could pave the way for Chinese businesses to take jobs away from Taiwan, the students are demanding greater transparency and a line-by-line review of the pact.

Court ruling lets Wang Jin-pyng keep KMT membership (2014/03/19)

Last fall Taiwan’s ruling KMT was rocked by a political dispute that led to the expulsion one of its highest-ranking members, Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng. Wang ended up keeping his party membership through an injunction, and today Taipei District Court ruled that the KMT violated the Civil Associations Act when it stripped Wang of his membership.

Family of slain fisherman relieved by Philippine homicide charges (2014/03/19)

The daughter of a Taiwanese fisherman slain last year by Philippine Coast Guard personnel is relieved to hear that charges have been filed. The Philippine Department of Justice charged eight suspects with homicide, two of whom also face obstruction of justice charges.

Taiwanese scientist on team that found ‘smoking gun’ evidence of cosmic inflation (2014/03/19)

Scientists are still celebrating the detection of gravitational waves, a finding that provides the strongest confirmation yet of prevailing models for early development of the universe. Among the scientists responsible for the landmark discovery is Stanford University assistant professor Kuo Chao-lin, a Taiwanese-born physicist who studied at National Taiwan University.

Doctor suggests non-surgical methods for treating sleeping disorders (2014/03/19)

More than half of Taiwan’s population is thought to suffer from some type of sleep disorder. Doctors recommend several methods for correcting this sometimes debilitating problem, including exercising the throat with wind instruments and using a ventilation device when sleeping at night.

DPP, KMT line up candidates for local elections (2014/03/18)

More nominations are emerging ahead of the year-end local elections. The DPP has confirmed that it will run former Health Minister Twu Shiing-jer again in Chiayi City. This time, he stands to benefit from a split pan blue vote. The KMT meanwhile looks likely to turn to an academic to face the popular incumbent William Lai in Tainan.
