Taichung company provides snowboards to top Olympic competitors (2014/03/03)

At the Sochi Olympics, Swedish snowboarder Sven Thorgren was one of many athletes to put on a show. While Thorgren is a familiar face, few know that his snowboard was made in Taiwan. Excellent design and manufacturing have turned a company that calls this sub-tropical island home into the world’s largest original equipment manufacturer of snowboards.

Taiwanese pitcher Yang Yao-hsun’s second spring training game didn’t go as well as his first. Appearing in relief for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Yang pitched one inning. Besides giving up a hit, he struck two batters and delivered a bases loaded walk. Despite the shaky appearance, the Pirates still beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1.

Man cycles around Taiwan distributing free red bean soup (2014/03/02)

Tonight we have an unusual story about a young man who undertook an unusual journey. Last summer Tang Da-ke唐大可 cycled around Taiwan on an electric-powered bike freely distributing red bean soup to people in schools, nursing homes, orphanages and other places. He overcame flat tires and mechanical failures to bring people a small bowl of happiness and show them that they too can live out their dreams. 

Ceremonies held to commemorate 228 Incident victims (2014/02/28)

Today was the 67th anniversary of the 228 Incident. On this day in 1947, KMT troops cracked down on protests of the party’s heavy-handed rule over Taiwan. In the following month, they proceeded to kill and arrest thousands of people to quell dissent. President Ma Ying-jeou appeared at ceremonies in Hualien and Taipei to remember the victims of the historical tragedy, while opposition party members marched in the capital. 

China’s top cross-strait negotiator visits Panda Pavilion (2014/02/28)

A trip by China’s lead negotiator to Taiwan concluded today with a visit to Taipei Zoo. An awkward moment occurred at the panda exhibit when Chen Deming compared his host Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin to the popular panda cub Yuanzai.

Largan share price sets record for electronics shares in Taiwan (2014/02/27)

The highest-priced stock on the Taiwan market has set a new milestone. Shares of smartphone camera lens maker Largan Precision closed at NT$1,320 a share on Wednesday, setting a record for electronics stocks in the local bourse’s history. And Largan shares continued to climb on Thursday.

Business was affected at the popular mala hot pot chain Tripod King after a report alleged that its soup base, purported to be made with natural ingredients, actually contains processed foods. But one chain’s struggles are not expected to damage Taiwan’s love of mala and spicy hot pot.
