Riot police forcefully remove student demonstrators from the Executive Yuan (2014/03/24)

For the first time ever last night the Executive Yuan was infiltrated by demonstrators. A faction of students acting separately from those leading occupation of the Legislature decided to expand protests over the trade-in-services pact that Taiwan signed with China to the nation’s main decision-making body. After a brief occupation there, they were forcefully expelled by riot police.

Students occupying Legislature deplore use of violence by riot police (2014/03/24)

As students occupying the Legislature watched those at the Executive Yuan being beaten with police batons and doused with water, they moved to fortify their own position. They criticized the violence and called it a violation of power.

Ma administration says anti-riot measures were needed to keep government running (2014/03/24)

President Ma and Premier Jiang Yi-huah have been reluctant to expel protesters occupying the Legislature, but they showed no such qualms about removing students from the Executive Yuan. Today they defended anti-riot measures that left more than 100 people injured. They placed blame for this bloody outcome on the students and other demonstrators who they accuse of “illegally” occupying government buildings.

Protester Could Face Jail (2014/03/24)

Police arrested 61 people involved in the occupation of the Executive Yuan. Thirty-five were deemed as being caught in the act of a crime and were questioned by prosecutors. One, National Tsing Hua University graduate student Wei Yang, was named leader of the occupation.

Students occupying the Legislature voiced support today for Wei Yang and the other demonstrators who stormed the Executive Yuan. Today student leader Chen Wei-ting wondered why people like Wei are persecuted for their efforts to expose the truth.

New barricades and security staff called in to protect Executive Yuan (2014/03/24)

Security measures were beefed up around the Executive Yuan after last evening’s siege. Before the siege, only around 40 officers were guarding the offices. Commentators say blame for such oversight lies with the National Police Agency and National Security Bureau.

Joint statement from professors backs student-led occupation of Legislature (2014/03/24)

Among the students’ biggest supporters are the professors who teach them. A group of professors issued a joint statement today slamming the Ma Ying-jeou administration’s handling of the student occupation. They also called for a “citizen’s constitutional conference,” though Premier Jiang Yi-huah later said he was unsure of the nature of such a meeting.

Amid student occupation, legislative speaker urges president to listen to the people (2014/03/21)

President Ma Ying-jeou hoped to find a solution to the student-led occupation in a meeting between leaders of the executive and legislative branches on Friday. But Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng did not attend. Wang felt it was inappropriate for him to join the meeting and said that Ma should instead negotiate with opposition parties and listen to the people.

Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng’s decision to skip the meeting with President Ma Ying-jeou was supported by opposition leaders. The head of the DPP also vowed to defend the students during their occupation.

Critics fear that trade-in-services pact will turn Taiwan into a second Hong Kong (2014/03/21)

One fear associated with the cross-strait trade-in-services pact is that it sends Taiwan further down the path toward unification with China. Critics compare the pact, and the Economic Cooperation Free Trade Agreement the Ma Ying-jeou administration previously signed, with treaties between Hong Kong and the mainland. They believe that the problems Hong Kong has faced during its integration with the PRC could likewise be felt in Taiwan. ##

Huang Shyh-ming resigns after being found guilty of leaking investigation info (2014/03/21)

When Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng skipped the meeting on the student occupation with President Ma Ying-jeou on Friday, it brought back memories of a major political dispute between the two last year. Today the person who started that dispute by telling Ma about alleged influence peddling by Wang was found guilty of leaking information related to an ongoing investigation. After being convicted, State Prosecutor-General Huang Shyh-ming resigned.

Taiwanese Tandem
The Baltimore Orioles 21-year-old pitcher Lin Yi-hsiang has been in Florida spring training with fellow countryman Chen Wei-yin. Both are lefties, and Lin says he has learned a lot under the guidance of Chen. Lin’s goals this year are to make it out of Class A Short Season and play for Taiwan at the Asian Games.

Protesting students await responses to trade pact demands (2014/03/20)

As students continue to occupy the Legislature over the trade-in-services pact Taiwan signed with China, they are waiting for the president and legislative speaker to respond to demands. These include a line-by-line review of the pact, which the ruling KMT had promised then reneged on, and direct dialogue with President Ma Ying-jeou.
