KMT candidates canvass for votes today as party begins phone survey for primary (2014/04/13)

The KMT will conduct a telephone survey today and tomorrow to help choose the KMT candidate for the Taipei Mayoral election. Sean Lien and his wife actively canvassed voters today, announcing a second batch of advisors including former Interior Minister Lee Hong-yuan and others. Another candidate in the primary, KMT Legislator, Ting Shou-chung also announced his list of advisors, many of whom are not former officials, but instead, come from civilian circles.

Scholars sign petition for citizen’s constitutional conference to discuss cross-strait trade (2014/04/13)

One of the demands the Sunflower Movement put forward during their occupation of the Legislature was the formation of a citizens’ constitutional conference. Today, a group of scholars signed a petition supporting such a conference and consensus for constitutional amendments to regulate and make cross-strait relations more transparent.

Sunflower Movement’s Next Step (2014/04/13)

After withdrawing from the Legislature on April 10, nearly 100 supporters of the Sunflower Movement came together once again today. This time, their task was moving many of the donated goods they received during their occupation of the Legislature to a temporary shelter. For the moment, these items will be stored at the Taiwan Theological College and Seminary in Yangmingshan.

Muhammad Yunus, a former Nobel Peace Prize winner, is honored in Taipei (2014/04/13)

Nobel Peace Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladesh native known for making micro-credit loans to the poor, was awarded an honorary citizen by Taipei Mayor, Hau Lung-bin. He shared his experiences creating opportunities and funding for the poor, and urged local young people to start their own businesses.

Songkran Festival in New Taipei City (2014/04/13)

The annual Songkran Water Festival took place today in New Taipei City’s Chungho. Both young and old took to the streets with water guns and plastic wash basins to enjoy Southeast Asian New Year celebrations.

Old Taipei Railway Workshop focus of urban renewal dispute (2014/04/13)

The Taipei Railway Workshop was long located on Taipei’s Civic Boulevard Section 5. But with railway lines moving underground, this repair facility was forced to move to a new location, leaving its old historical base abandoned. The area could be turned over to commercial use to create a new cultural park, but this plan has not been well received by railway enthusiasts who hope to preserve this important piece of history.

Demonstrators, CtiTV employees engage in shouting match (2014/04/09)

Angry demonstrators opposed to CtiTV were met today by a raucous group of CtiTV employees. As the protesters accused CtiTV of biased coverage of protests against the services trade pact Taiwan signed with China, CtiTV accused the protesters of infringing on freedom of the press.

KMT lawmaker’s supporters, police guard against demonstration that never arrives (2014/04/09)

Another protest in Taipei’s Neihu District today targeted KMT Legislator Alex Tsai. More than a hundred police and Tsai supporters were on hand to defend the lawmaker’s office, but they had little to do as most of the demonstrators were busy spreading their message through the neighborhoods.

Taipei mayor wants demonstrators out of Legislature and surrounding areas (2014/04/09)

Most students are expected to leave the Legislature tomorrow evening, though some demonstrators have vowed to remain in the outside square. That leaves the potential for conflict as Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin has said that the city wants the entire Legislature and surrounding areas back to “normal” by Friday morning.

Volunteer technicians pitch in to repair Legislature as students prepare to leave (2014/04/09)

Volunteer technicians and others have begun repairing damaged equipment in the Legislature. Speaker Wang Jin-pyng says several benefactors have offered to cover all costs and no public funds will be used.

Sunflower Movement leaders vow new action if President Ma disregards their demands (2014/04/09)

A day before students are scheduled to leave the Legislature, one of their leaders issued a warning to President Ma Ying-jeou. The students are deeply opposed to a bill proposed by the Cabinet to monitor agreements with China and say they will renew large-scale demonstrations if it passes in its current form.

As student occupation of the Legislature ends, political parties assess damage (2014/04/09)

Soul-searching took place today among members of the KMT and DPP. While members of the ruling party warned President Ma Ying-jeou that the KMT is in danger of losing the youth vote, a former premier in the DPP said the nation’s largest opposition party lacks influence.

After struggling in his season debut, Baltimore Orioles pitcher Chen Wei-yin took the mound on Tuesday against the New York Yankees. The Taiwanese left hander hoped to get his first win of the season.

As students prepare to end their occupation of the Legislature on Thursday evening, today Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng met with ruling and opposition lawmakers. They agreed to hold a plenary session this Friday.

Unsatisfied with government assurances, some students will continue protest (2014/04/08)

While most students seem happy to leave the Legislature on Thursday, some are unwilling. They vow to remain in the square in front of the Legislature and will be joined by members of more than 10 citizen groups.

Students will rely on promise from legislative speaker (2014/04/08)

Students are withdrawing from the Legislature following a pledge from Speaker Wang Jin-pyng to legislate a cross-Taiwan Strait monitoring mechanism ahead of the services trade pact. President Ma Ying-jeou promises to push for simultaneous review, but it is Wang who controls the legislative docket.

Sunflower Movement plans to donate supplies and preserve artwork and banners (2014/04/08)

As students leave the Legislature, they will have to have to decide what to do with leftover supplies, posters and banners. Most items will be donated to charity while those with historical value will be preserved.

Debate begins over who pays for damage to the Legislature (2014/04/08)

Students departing the Legislature will leave behind millions of NT dollars in damage to facilities and equipment at the Legislature. They will rely on donations to pay for much of the damage, though it is unclear who will pay if they do not collect enough money.

Speculation over Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou’s role in settling trade row (2014/04/08)

During the student occupation of the Legislature, there were occasional reports of Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou inserting himself into discussions. Some believe Gou played a useful role in negotiating an end to the stalemate while others think he was simply posturing for Beijing.
