Switch malfunction causes serious high-speed rail delays (2014/04/29)

About 10,000 passengers were affected by the most serious of a recent spate of delays on the high-speed railway. A switch malfunction delayed traffic Tuesday morning between Taipei Main Station and Banqiao Station. More than three hours were needed to restore normal service.

High-speed railway operator expresses regret over service disruption (2014/04/29)

Following today’s service disruption, the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation held a press conference to express regret to passengers. It blamed recent delays on micro switch quality problems and said it is working with the supplier to solve the issue.

Industrial leaders expressed mixed views today over plans to mothball the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant. While many fear that higher electricity costs will drive away investors, Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou said the policy shift presents an opportunity for local businesses to find ways to save energy.

22-year-old Taiwanese pitcher Wang Wei-chung is becoming more comfortable in the major leagues, as shown by a recent video that shows him dancing in the locker room to the song “Everybody Wang Chung Tonight.”

Robot Builders
Students from Lin Yuan Elementary School, Kaohsiung returned to Taiwan today as winners in the recent First Lego League robotics competition. At the FLL competition in Missouri they developed a robot capable of overcoming obstacles associated with a tsunami disaster. Their gold medal is the first for the school in an international competition.

Local college tries to dress up snack foods that revolt foreigners (2014/04/29)

CNN reported that foreigners find several Taiwanese snacks revolting, such as preserved eggs, pig blood rice pudding and stinky tofu. To dispel this assertion, a local university invited chefs to put a twist on the ingredients so they would be more appealing to foreigners.

Premier agrees to halt work, but not halt construction, to the nuclear plant (2014/04/28)

A gap remains between the government and anti-nuclear power protesters. While Premier Jiang Yi-huah has agreed to halt work on the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant, he will not concede a halt to construction. Jiang hopes to leave room for the government to build support so the plant can open in the future.

Weakened Lin Yi-hsiung receives treatment on 7th day of hunger strike (2014/04/28)

A hunger strike by former DPP Chairman Lin Yi-hsiung is among several factors that contributed to concessions from the KMT toward the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant. Monday was the seventh day of Lin’s strike. Visibly weakened, Lin left the protest site to get treatment at National Taiwan University Hospital.

Taipei mayor orders use of water cannons to evict nuclear protestors (2014/04/28)

Sunday’s occupation of Zhongxiao West Road spilled over to this morning. To restore normal traffic conditions at the start of the work week, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin ordered the use of water cannons to disperse the crowd.

Economics ministry argues that halting work on nuclear plant could lead to dire results (2014/04/28)

Supporters of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant argue that the cost of halting work could run into the billions of NT dollars. Today the economics minister said that not only higher electricity rates but also rationing could occur if the plant does not produce electricity.

Green sea turtles bring eco-tourists to Pingtung’s Siaoliouciou (2014/04/28)

In recent years Pingtung’s Siaoliouciou has promoted conservation efforts to protect endangered green sea turtles. Some 300 of these turtles are thought to live in the area, contributing to a surge in eco-tourists.

In his third major league appearance on Sunday, Taiwanese pitcher Wang Wei-chung began with a strikeout, the first of his big league career. With a fastball topping out at 96 miles per hour, Wang needed just 13 pitches to retire all three batters he faced. Wang’s Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Chicago Cubs 4:0 but retained the best record in baseball.

Large anti-nuclear protestor occupies Zhongxiao West Road shutting down traffic (2014/04/27)

Anti-nuclear protests continued today with participants occupying and closing off Zhongxiao West Road for traffic. Police had attempted to confine protesters to just one lane of the roadway, though many easily crossed barricades and sat in the street, paralyzing traffic.

Ma meets KMT municipal leaders, announces work stoppage at Fourth Nuclear Power Plant (2014/04/27)

As anti-nuclear protests continued in Taipei, President Ma convened a meeting of KMT municipal leaders. Later, he announced construction on the two reactors within the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant would be halted, though a safety check of the no. 1 reactor would continue. Ma also announced that the future of the power plant would be put to a public referendum.

Japanese experts discuss the necessity of completing Fourth Nuclear Power Plant (2014/04/27)

Today, Taipower invited Arima Akito, a famed nuclear researcher and former president of the University of Tokyo along with a Japanese lawmaker to discuss Japan’s experience with nuclear power following the Fukushima disaster. Taipower President Chu Wen-chen, also commented on anti-nuclear protests, adding that delays in constructing the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant have already lead to huge losses as he believes efforts should be made to complete the plant.
