Amid student occupation, legislative speaker urges president to listen to the people (2014/03/21)
President Ma Ying-jeou hoped to find a solution to the student-led occupation in a meeting between leaders of the executive and legislative branches on Friday. But Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng did not attend. Wang felt it was inappropriate for him to join the meeting and said that Ma should instead negotiate with opposition parties and listen to the people.
President Ma’s plan for a meeting Friday between top members of his administration and the legislative speaker hit a snag when Speaker Wang Jin-pyng didn’t show. Ma hoped the two sides could work together to restore legislative operations.
At midday the Presidential Office issued a press release. It said that Wang felt the party caucuses should meet in order to reach a consensus. Apparently, the president agreed and the two sides decided to postpone the meeting.
Later, Wang followed with his own statement. He said that president used the Constitution as legal basis for the meeting, but that the article cited doesn’t apply to the dispute over the trade pact because it’s not a dispute between two or more branches of government.
Wang refused to attend on Constitutional grounds. He gave his position to Ma before the scheduled meeting time.
Wang also said that as leader of the ruling party, Ma should look at the current situation and listen to the public opinion in order to find a quick solution.
In Wang’s absence, the president met with his vice president and premier for two hours.
