Ou Chin-der (歐晉德) resigned as chairman of Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation without warning Wednesday night, apparently to take responsibility for the high-speed rail line’s recent problems. Lawmakers were stunned by the decision and angered by its timing, coming as it did just a day before he was to testify at a legislative hearing.

Ou’s resignation ends a four-and-a-half year stint as head of the high-speed rail company. He is best known for leading the company out of a financial crisis after he took over in 2009 and making it profitable in 2011. The Bureau of Consular Affairs recommends that people not wear colored contact lenses when taking passport photos. It believes that these lenses could alter the appearance in such a way that makes travelers vulnerable to having their visas rejected. 

Kaohsiung successfully harvests new variety of jujube (2014/03/05)

Many people have eaten candied jujube, but few have tried a new variety called Kaohsiung 11 “Honey” jujube. It is described as literally bursting with flavor. Farmers hope to take advantage of its rarity and taste to market it as a high-end export product.
