Taiwan warns locals to avoid colored contacts in passport photos (2014/03/05)

The Bureau of Consular Affairs recommends that people not wear colored contact lenses when taking passport photos. It believes that these lenses could alter the appearance in such a way that makes travelers vulnerable to having their visas rejected.

These contact lenses make pupils look bigger and blacker. Others can even make the pupil appear a different color. Altering one’s appearance in such ways can lead to problems when applying for a visa.

We have encountered examples of European and North American countries being strict with people wearing contact lenses that enlarge pupils or color the eyes, ultimately resulting in some having their visa applications rejected.

Even after being granted a visa, travelers can encounter trouble when attempting to clear immigration, especially in countries that use an iris recognition system. For this reason, the Bureau of Consular Affairs recommends that people taking passport photos not wear lenses that alter the appearance of the eyes.

The recommendation is not compulsory, but the bureau suggests travelers follow it to avoid problems. It has also informed the Tourism Bureau and travel agencies that such practices could lead to inconveniences when traveling abroad.
